How it works

  1. Choose a STEP file (.step / .stp, from any CAD system), or drop it onto the box above. It opens right away.
  2. The file is read in your browser. The geometry engine (OpenCascade) is loaded into the page; your file is not uploaded anywhere.
  3. Turn, zoom and measure. Drag to rotate, scroll to zoom, and click faces, edges or corners to measure them.

What you can do

Parts and assemblies

Single parts, multi-body parts and whole assemblies with all their parts in place.

Measure

Click a face, an edge or a corner: hole and shaft diameters, fillet radii, edge lengths, corner coordinates. Click a second one: distances between faces, edges, hole axes and corners, or the angle between them. The pointer snaps to corners and edges, and a click on a hole or a circular edge snaps to its centre.

Size, volume, surface area

The overall size (X × Y × Z), volume, surface area and number of faces of a part, in millimetres, also when the file is in inches.

Broken files

Some CAD programs export edges the wrong way round, so that other viewers show missing or wrong faces. These files are repaired when they are read, and you are told so.

Nothing uploaded

The whole file stays on your computer. This also works for confidential parts.

Compare two versions

Have two versions of a part? Compare them and see what changed: holes, fillets, chamfers, dimensions.

Questions

Which files can I open?

STEP files (.step, .stp; AP203, AP214 and AP242) of single parts, multi-body parts and assemblies, exported from any CAD system. Native formats such as SolidWorks or Fusion files, drawings (PDF) and meshes (STL) are not supported.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The file is read by a geometry engine that runs in your browser. Our server never receives it.

Is it free?

Yes. Viewing and measuring is free and needs no account.

How exact are the measurements?

Diameters, lengths, distances and angles are calculated from the exact geometry in the STEP file (planes, cylinders, straight and circular edges and so on), not from the triangles shown on screen.

Which browsers work?

Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. Large assemblies need a few seconds and enough memory.

Compare two STEP files

Two versions of the same part or assembly? CAD Compare tells you whether they are identical, the same part in another position, or different, and exactly what changed.
